Call for Proposals: Canal Blocking for Sustainable Peatland Management (Jambi Province)

Jun 04, 2026

The FINCAPES (Flood Impacts, Carbon Pricing, and Ecosystem Sustainability) project invites qualified individuals and agencies to submit proposals for the construction and monitoring of canal blocking structures in Sungai Gelam Village, Jambi Province. This initiative is a collaborative effort implemented by the University of Waterloo (funded by Global Affairs Canada) and IPB University, supporting the IPB Centre for Applied Research in Nature-based Solutions (I-CAN). The project aims to accelerate the adoption of Nature-based Solutions (NbS) for the restoration and conservation of critical peatland ecosystems.

Project Overview

Peatland restoration in Sungai Gelam Village spans 47 hectares across two distinct zones: Block 1 (Shrubs) and Block 2 (Agroforestry). Due to previously constructed canals that lack Peat Rewetting Infrastructure (IPG), these areas suffer from severe seasonal droughts and frequent land fires.

Objectives

  1. Restore Hydrological Functions: Install canal blocking structures to increase groundwater levels and rewet degraded peatlands.
  2. Mitigate Fire Risks: Improve water retention to reduce fire hazards during the dry season.
  3. Prevent Degradation: Stop peat degradation and land subsidence while supporting natural vegetation recovery.
  4. Community Empowerment: Strengthen local capacity through participatory water management and execution.

Scope of Work & Key Outputs

The selected contractor will be responsible for:

  1. Site Assessment & Planning: Mapping canal networks and drafting technical designs.
  2. Community Engagement: Coordinating with local forest farmer groups and ensuring inclusive participation.
  3. Construction & Installation: Installing 1 unit in the primary canal and 2 units in the secondary canals using environmentally friendly, semi-permanent local timber designs.
  4. Monitoring & Evaluation: Conducting three-month hydrological impact assessments and delivering performance reports.
